Nuts about Trout: 2012 One Bug Brings Fly Fishers to Upper Delaware

HANCOCK, N.Y.— the annual One Bug fly-fishing tournament might seem like a nutty idea–unless you’re crazy about trout.

For the past five years the One Bug has lured two-person fishing teams to Hancock, where the East and West branches of the Delaware River meet. Though contestants must fish with only “One Bug” for the entire day of fishing, face uncertain early spring weather and water conditions, and are up against some of the toughest trout to catch on the planet, they keep coming back for more. :Read full press release

State regulators kept to tight deadlines to produce for public review an environmental impact study and proposed drilling rules, and the state’s top environmental official said drilling permits could be granted as early as this year.

One good turn leads to another. That’s the nice life lesson I’ve learned from a recent incident involving our rivers. Please allow me to tell you the story.

I serve as board chairman of Friends of the Upper Delaware River (FUDR), a non-profit organization that looks after the welfare of the river system. A little more than a year ago, I got a call from John O’Connor, mayor of Deposit, N.Y. He was looking for a little help.

E.P.A. Links Tainted Water in Wyoming to Hydraulic Fracturing for Natural Gas

The draft report, after a three-year study by the Environmental Protection Agency, represents a new scientific and political skirmish line over whether fracking, as it is more commonly known, poses a threat in the dozens of places around the nation where it is now being used to extract previously unreachable energy resources locked within rock.
