Canfield/FUDR Fly Fishing 2017 Summer Camp a Big Success
21 Campers enrolled in the Canfield/FUDR Fly Fishing Camp this summer. They learned how to gear up before getting on the water, fly casting, fly tying, basic entomology, river ecology, and stream stewardship. They tied flies, learned how to cast with their new Orvis rod and reel, and went on field trips to the Beaverkill and the East Branch and main stem of the Upper Delaware River. Our kids made lots of new friends and had a great time at the beautiful French Woods Sports and Arts Camp.
A big “Thank you!” to the NJ TU State Council for providing all of our fly fishing campers with a year-long youth membership in Trout Unlimited. We also extend our appreciation to the Delaware River Club and the White Tail Country Fly Shop for donating goodie bags full of cool fly gear for each camper. Thanks to Joe Demalderis and Ben Rinker, who donated a raffle prize for a 1/2 day float trip on the UDR. All 2017 campers received a raffle ticket, and August session camper Nick Sanderson of Williamsville, NY was the lucky winner! And finally, thanks to everyone who made a donation to the camp scholarship program, to all of our volunteers who came and shared their expertise, and to the Canfield Family for making all of this happen.
We hope that all of the campers left ‘hooked on fly fishing’.
2017 Dates: Week 1: June 25 – July 2, 2017, Week 2: August 6 – August 13, 2017

Friends of the Upper Delaware River (FUDR) and the Bill Canfield Fly Fishing School partner on a great summer camp program in Hancock, NY that teaches kids (ages 12-17) about the sport of fly fishing and the importance of river conservation.
Camp participants learn how to gear up before getting on the water, fly casting, fly tying, basic entomology and river ecology. With a little luck, our campers also learn how to handle and release fish after they are caught in one of the local ponds or on the river! All of these skills are taught by some of the very best nationally known guides and anglers on the Delaware River.
By the time our kids leave the camp, they are versed in the basic elements of fly fishing and have gained a new appreciation for the value of protecting our fragile natural resources. This single experience will very likely trigger a lifelong passion for angling adventure and a commitment to sound conservation practices.
The program takes place in Hancock, NY in the headwaters of the magnificent Upper Delaware River in the scenic Catskill Mountains at the fabulous French Woods Sports and Arts Center summer camp and have access to all of the amenities of this beautiful facility (see www.fwsportsarts.com).
